Because it supports Layer 3 routing, inter-VLAN traffic and routing tables can live on the switch instead of a separate router. On top of that, it has a fixed-port design that keeps configuration simple. With 64 (MB) of onboard flash, firmware and configuration backups don't depend on a remote server. On the compatibility side, it's rack-mount, in a 1U footprint, a 19-inch rack fit, takes ac input power, and uses standard front-to-back airflow to match common data-center airflow layouts.
