It's built for storage teams, not general LAN duty: connecting servers and disk arrays over a Fibre Channel fabric where frame loss isn't acceptable. Keep your Ethernet switches for everything else. Wiring is handled by 24 total network ports, laid out as 24xSFP+,Active Ports16 Gigabit Ethernet, topping out at 16Gb Fibre Channel per port. As a Fibre Channel switch it handles SAN traffic at 16Gb Fibre Channel with low latency. On top of that, it has SFP+ expansion for uplinks. Firmware and configuration live in onboard non-volatile memory, surviving reboots and power cycles. Physically, it's rack-mount, in a 1U footprint, rack-friendly, drawing ac input power and exhausting air standard front-to-back airflow, so it fits cleanly next to existing gear. Also, built-in console access plus a USB port makes setup and firmware recovery easier; optical fiber media over SFP+ covers both copper and fiber runs.
