  • HP ProCurve 2708 (J4898-60101) makes sense if you're shopping for anyone who wants a no-configuration switch that just extends the network. Home offices, small businesses and workgroups that just want more reliable ports - without VLANs or a CLI to learn - are the target here. Plug it in and go. On the port side, you get 8 total network ports, laid out as 8xGigabit EthernetRJ-45, topping out at Gigabit (1GbE) per port. It also adds a fixed-port design that keeps configuration simple. Configuration persists in onboard memory through reboots and power cycles, no separate storage needed. As a Layer 2 switch, it focuses on fast MAC-address forwarding and VLAN segmentation rather than routing. Physically, it's rack-mount, in a 1U footprint, rack-friendly, drawing ac input power and exhausting air standard front-to-back airflow, so it fits cleanly next to existing gear.
